6 tips for compiling a unit handbook, reader or guide
When formatting a unit reader you must follow the conditions of the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) licence and database licences.
-
The purpose of copying must be both educational and non-commercial (not for sale other than at a cost-recovery price). In addition, copies must only be provided to enrolled Monash students and staff. If the proposed copying does not fit within the scope of the CAL Licence, permission must be obtained from the copyright owners or copyright will be infringed.
There are limits on copying chapters from books or articles from journals or newspapers.
Under the CAL licence, one chapter or 10% of the total number of pages of a book can be copied and one article out of each issue of a journal or newspaper can be copied. If a book is not separately published and available for purchase within a reasonable time at an ordinary commercial price, then more than 10% of the pages or one chapter can be copied. Detailed records must be kept of the investigation showing that the book is not available for purchase. If there is a special issue of a journal and articles are on exactly the same topic, more than one article may be copied. Please check with the Copyright Adviser when copying more than one chapter or article.
Each author of a work and the source of each article or book chapter must be cited.
Under moral rights provisions, the author of a work must be clearly attributed when the work is reproduced. The source of the article or chapter also needs to be cited. The work should be reproduced as in the original, without additions or changes.
Articles from some online journal databases can not be reproduced in a unit reader.
Journal databases have different terms and conditions which must be followed. Some databases do not allow articles which are accessed online, to be printed and included in a course reader. If you want to copy an article which comes from an online journal database, please check with the copyright adviser on 9905 5732.
Articles from an online journal database may be accessible through a hard copy of the journal.
If the library holds a hard copy of a journal as well as an online copy from an electronic database, use the article sourced from the hard copy. This can be reproduced under the CAL licence, so you do not need to check the terms and conditions of the database copy.
A copyright statement must be included on the course readers.
Any course readers that are produced must follow the limitations on copying stated above and should contain this copyright statement on the cover or first page.
Copyright © (insert year). NOT FOR RESALE. All materials produced for this course of study are reproduced under Part VB of the Copyright Act 1968, or with permission of the copyright owner or under terms of database agreements. These materials are protected by copyright. Monash students are permitted to use these materials for personal study and research only. Use of these materials for any other purposes, including copying or resale,
without express permission of the copyright owner, may infringe copyright. The copyright owner may take action against you for infringement.
