Use of Monash computer resources

The University maintains computers, photocopiers and other equipment for the use of Monash staff and students and other authorised users. Use of this equipment must be in accordance with Monash statutes and policies and all relevant laws.

Use of Peer-to-Peer software is banned at Monash University without permission from the Head of Department.

In the absence of any specific permission or licence agreement that may allow such use, you cannot use your computer at Monash to:

  • Download third-party copyright materials such as films, MP3 recordings, or software from the Internet
  • Upload third-party copyright material such as audio files, video files, software or commercial photographs to a Monash website and make them available to the public
  • Distribute by email any third-party copyright material (MP3s, video files, commercial photographs or software) to another person or organisation
  • Store third-party copyright material, including MP3s, video files, commercial photographs or software, on computers or servers

Monash policies prohibit staff from

  • Providing links on a Monash website that offer access to pirated or copyright infringing material;
  • Directing users to copy infringing material (pirated MP3s, video files, software, unauthorised document copies)

For details refer to the IT Use policies on the ITS website and as listed in the Monash Policy Bank.

Keeping your 'authcate' details secure

It is important to keep your Monash network account details confidential and secure at all times. If not properly protected, your account could be used by others to gain unauthorised access to Monash resources and to engage in unlawful activity on the Monash network. The following steps can help protect the security of your Monash account against unauthorised use:

  • change your password(s) regularly
  • don't use a dictionary word (in any language) as a password
  • regularly virus check/scan your own computer system
  • don't reply to emails that ask for usernames/passwords
  • make sure that emails linking to webpages which ask for usernames/passwords are actually genuine Monash webpages
