Music Licence Overview – What is the Music Licence?

The Music licence is an educational licence negotiated between the universities and the Music collecting societies. The collecting societies act on behalf of music publishers, composers and record labels.

Not all music composers, publishers and labels are represented by the collecting societies. Some must be contacted directly for permission to use their music.

Only music within the music licence repertoire can be used under the terms of the Music Licence. For details of the licence repertoire, if you are from the Music School, contact the School of Music Facilities Manager, otherwise contact the Copyright Adviser

Under the Music licence, audio recordings can be copied for the educational purposes of Monash University.

The licence permits free performances of musical works at University Events and recordings of those performances of musical works within the repertoire of the licence. However there are other limitations involved in making recordings see Recording Performances.

The music licence allows staff to make audio recordings available to students in a relevant course of study, within the limits of the licence.

The music licence does not allow the copying of print music, the circumvention of technological protection measures or removal of rights management information, the performance of music with a paying audience or in a dramatic context, or the downloading of sound recordings and placing them online.

Send inquiries to the university's Copyright Advisor.
