Music Licence Overview

The Music licence is an educational licence negotiated between all Australian universities and the four australian music collecting societies: APRA/AMCOS, PPCA and ARIA, who represent most (but not all) music publishers, composers and record labels. The licence mainly deals with the recording of music, but also some other activities.

Not all music composers, publishers and labels are represented by the collecting societies. Where an composer, artist or record label is not represented by the music collecting societies permission for use needs to be obtained directly from the music composer/artist, record company label or music owner.

Only music within the music licence repertoire can be used under the terms of the Music Licence. For details of the licence repertoire, if you are from the Music School, contact the School of Music Facilities Manager, otherwise contact the Copyright Adviser

Under the Music licence, audio recordings can be copied for the educational purposes of Monash University.

The licence permits free (no audience charge) performances of musical works from the licence repertoire at University Events. Performances can also be video recorded. There are other limitations involved in making recordings. Consult the the School of Music Facilities Manager, or the Copyright Adviser for further advice.

The music licence allows staff to make audio recordings of musical works from the licence repertoire, as sourced from legally purchased CDs or other tangible formats, available to students as part of a course of study.

The music licence does not allow the copying of print music, the circumvention of technological protection measures or removal of rights management information, the performance of music with a paying audience or in a dramatic context, the use of downloaded sound recordings or the placing of any music online in a downloadable format ('streaming' only).
