Using screen shots

What are screen shots?

Screen shots or screen dumps are still images taken from computer programs. Screen shots are often used in training materials to explain how to use a computer program. Screen shots are protected by copyright.

How can I use screen shots?

If you use screen shots you must ensure that you comply with the licence requirements for the computer program from which the screen shot has been taken. Licence requirements for computer programs can be found on the websites of the software companies.

General rules

The following general rules are common to most licences:

  1. Always include an acknowledgement of the product and be as specific as possible - eg "Screenshot of Biology course built using WebCT 3.7 Campus Edition" or "Adobe product screen shot reprinted with permission from Adobe Systems Incorporated."
  2. Do no use screen shots in a way that is disparaging of the product or the product company.
  3. Do not use screen shots in a way that implies an endorsement of Monash materials by the product company.
  4. Do not use screen shots that contain material that is not owned by the product company without seeking permission from the copyright owners of the third party material (this includes logos and trademarks of other companies).
  5. Do not use screen shots from beta products or unreleased products.
  6. Do not use screen shots for commercial purposes without obtaining permission from the software company.
  7. Screen shots may be re-sized but you should not alter the screen image and/or title bars, drop down lists, dialogue boxes, or icons. Screen shots should appear as they would in the software product.
