Monash University copyright statements

Copyright arises automatically and does not need to be registered in Australia. However, it is advisable to use a copyright notice to remind readers that the material is protected by copyright. The following copyright statements should be used on materials that are produced at Monash University.

Copyright Warning for course materials

The following copyright notice should be included on print materials that are owned by Monash.

"Copyright Warning
All materials produced for teaching this course of study, including all lectures and any supplementary materials are protected by copyright. You are permitted to use these materials only for your personal study and research. Use of the materials for any other purposes, including sale of your personal lecture notes, without express permission of the copyright owner, may infringe copyright. The copyright owner may take action against you for infringement.”

Course readers

The following statement should be used on course readers or unit guides that contain copyright material owned by third parties or a mixture of copyright owners.

Copyright © (insert year). NOT FOR RESALE. All materials produced for this course of study are reproduced under Part VB of the Copyright Act 1968, or with permission of the copyright owner or under terms of database agreements. These materials are protected by copyright. Monash students are permitted to use these materials for personal study and research only. Use of these materials for any other purposes, including copying or resale, without express permission of the copyright owner, may infringe copyright.

Course materials distributed in CD, DVD or CD Rom Format

Any course material that contains copyright material owned by third parties or a mixture of copyright owners, that are distributed in CD format to students, in reliance on the Part VB CAL Educational licence, must include an electronic CAL copyright warning notice that appears before the material is accessed.

Any CD or CD-ROM that contains copyright material owned by the university or by Monash staff or by third parties or a mixture of copyright owners must include a warning label that states

Copyright © (insert year). These materials are for the use of Monash students only. Monash students are permitted to use these materials for research and study. Use of these materials for any other purposes, including copying, communication or sale, without express permission of the copyright owner, may infringe copyright. Users are reminded that no copy of the contents of this item can be retained. Students use this item at their own risk.

Print and web publications written solely by Monash staff where Monash is the copyright owner

The following statement should be used on the verso page of print publications and web publications such as pdf documents that have been written solely by Monash staff.

Webpages

On Monash websites the following statement should be displayed on each webpage. The copyright statement indicates the year copyright ownership was first asserted. Do not change this to accord with the year the webpage was last updated.
