Part VB 'CAL' licence overview

The CAL licence is the educational statutory licence under Part VB of the Copyright Act. It is administered by the copyright collecting agency for authors and publishers - Copyright Agency Limited (CAL).

Under the CAL licence, limited amounts of text, images and written music can be copied by Monash staff, strictly for the educational purposes of the University. Only currently enrolled students and staff can have access to material copied under the CAL licence.

Additional restrictions apply to copies in electronic formats and copies that are put online or transmitted by email. Readings or other text excerpts must not be put directly online independently of the Readings and Reserve service.

The following types of usage are not permitted under the CAL licence:

  • modification or adaptation
  • distributing copies to the public or otherwise publishing copies
  • posting copies on the web for public access
  • 'public performance' of copyright works, eg recitals, concerts, plays
  • sale or other usage of copies for commercial purposes

Refer to the Teaching page on this site for more information.
